Naxos for Kids

Walks & hikes

A short walk can be the best adventure. Choose for today’s energy: lanes, olive trees, marble giants or a mountain.

Ages and family times are editorial guidance, excluding driving and allowing breaks. They do not replace a trail map. Maps links locate a starting area, not a hiking track. Confirm parking, trail conditions and café or church opening locally.

Little explorations

Chora → Kastro → Portara

Build your own walk through the old town lanes, then along the waterfront to Portara. Keep to the harbour section when little legs need an easier outing.

Who is it for?
All ages; carry babies in the Kastro
Allow
1–2 hours, including exploring and breaks
Route
Flexible walk; return to the harbour
Effort
Easy; steps and slopes in the Kastro
Stroller / carrier
Waterfront easier with a stroller; carrier for lanes and steps
Shade
Variable in town; little near Portara
Parking
Use permitted parking on the town edge; availability unverified
Break
Cafés and food in town, subject to opening
A game along the way

Find three door colours, a cat and a boat.

Family tip : If wind or waves affect the causeway to Portara, stay on the town side.

Chalki → Agios Georgios Diassoritis

Leave Chalki for a Byzantine church in the Tragea valley: a small, tangible goal followed by a village break.

Who is it for?
Accompanied little walkers; baby in a carrier
Allow
45–75 minutes with stops, estimate
Route
Out and back from Chalki
Effort
Short walk; uneven ground possible
Stroller / carrier
Carrier preferred; check stroller passage locally
Shade
Partial, depending on route and time
Parking
Park around Chalki; spaces not guaranteed
Break
Return to Chalki for a break
A game along the way

Look for olive trunks with unusual shapes.

Family tip : The walk is still worthwhile when the church interior is closed.

Flerio: marble giants

A short exploration of the kouroi near Melanes. Start with the Flerio kouros, then decide whether to add Farangi, which involves more walking.

Who is it for?
All ages for the short visit; adapt the extension
Allow
30–60 minutes at the first site; longer with Farangi
Route
Visit from Flerio; optional extension
Effort
Short at the first site; rougher towards Farangi
Stroller / carrier
Carrier; do not assume stroller access
Shade
Varies by site
Parking
Car approach; confirm permitted parking locally
Break
Bring water and a snack; break later in Melanes
A game along the way

Imagine why the giant stayed lying down; look at its feet and arms without climbing on it.

Family tip : This short visit is not the full Melanes–Myli–Potamia trail.

Trails & villages

Potamia: a little valley walk

From Ano Potamia, explore a section towards Mesi Potamia, among villages and greenery. Agree a turning point rather than attempting all of trail 6.

Who is it for?
Children comfortable on trails; babies according to carrying conditions
Allow
1–2 hours depending on turning point, estimate
Route
Out and back on part of trail 6
Effort
Variable; paving, slopes and uneven sections
Stroller / carrier
Carrier; stroller not recommended on the trail
Shade
Some shaded sections, not the whole walk
Parking
Around Ano Potamia; keep lanes clear
Break
Village break subject to opening; carry water
A game along the way

Listen for three different sounds and look for an old mill.

Family tip : A downhill outward walk means an uphill return: save little legs some energy.

Chalki → Moni → Kaloxylos loop

A Tragea valley loop linking villages and heritage. Prepare with a trail 4 map: it is a proper walk, even though the official network rates it easy.

Who is it for?
Children used to walking and teens
Allow
3–4 hours as a family; official reference 2 h 10 without stops
Route
Trail 4; 6.2 km on the regional route
Effort
Moderate for a family because of its length
Stroller / carrier
No stroller; carrying only with hiking experience
Shade
Alternating shade and sun
Parking
Start and finish in Chalki; check spaces
Break
Villages along the loop; bring a snack
A game along the way

Keep a notebook: draw a leaf and a door without picking anything.

Family tip : For a short outing choose Chalki–Diassoritis; the full loop is not a little stroll.

Danakos → Fotodotis monastery

Climb from Danakos to the fortified Fotodotis monastery, with views over eastern Naxos. The path starts uphill on stone paving, then passes through woodland: a destination that looks like a little castle.

Who is it for?
Children used to uphill walking; teens
Allow
1.5–2.5 hours with breaks, estimate to confirm for your start point
Route
Out and back on the first part of trail 3; return to Danakos
Effort
Moderate; uphill outward, downhill back
Stroller / carrier
No stroller; carrying only for adults confident on trails
Shade
Partial in wooded sections
Parking
Around Danakos, keeping access clear; spaces unverified
Break
Carry water and snacks; village break subject to opening
A game along the way

Look at the monastery from outside: what makes it look like a castle?

Family tip : Check opening before planning an interior visit. This walk ends at the monastery, rather than following the full crossing to Chalki.

Apeiranthos → Agia Kyriaki

Follow an old path from Apeiranthos to the Byzantine church of Agia Kyriaki in the Kalloni area. A cultural goal among changing landscapes, then return to the village by the same path.

Who is it for?
Children able to walk about 6 km; teens
Allow
2.5–3.5 hours with breaks; municipal source: about 1 hour one way
Route
About 3 km each way, 6 km return; part of trail 1
Effort
Moderate for a family; length and uneven terrain
Stroller / carrier
No stroller; carrying only with experience and energy in reserve
Shade
Variable; do not expect continuous shade
Parking
Around Apeiranthos; locate permitted parking
Break
Eat in the village after the walk; carry water and snacks
A game along the way

Find three leaf shapes, then draw the outline of the church.

Family tip : The interior may be closed. Turn back at the church; continuing to the emery mines makes a longer outing and requires a different return plan.

For experienced hikers

Tsikalario → Apano Kastro

A path from Tsikalario leads towards a castle on a rocky hill. The landscape below can be your goal instead of the final climb.

Who is it for?
Older children steady on rocky ground; teens
Allow
1.5–2.5 hours depending on goal, estimate
Route
Out and back; part of trail 5, not the full crossing
Effort
Moderate, then more demanding on rocks
Stroller / carrier
No stroller; avoid the final climb while carrying a baby
Shade
Little shade
Parking
In the village without obstructing residents; check spaces
Break
Carry water and snacks
A game along the way

Imagine how people watched over the island from this height.

Family tip : Ruins and rocks lack continuous protection: keep away from edges and turn back when terrain exceeds the group’s confidence.

Keramoti → Routsouna waterfall

A trail leads from Keramoti’s old bridge to the waterfall. Discover a greener side of Naxos; ask in the village about the path and current water flow.

Who is it for?
Children used to trails and teens
Allow
Allow half a day including travel; confirm walking time locally
Route
Out and back from the village
Effort
Moderate; care on stones and damp sections
Stroller / carrier
No stroller; unsuitable for beginner baby carrying
Shade
Variable; vegetated sections
Parking
In the village; locate permitted parking
Break
Bring water and a light meal
A game along the way

Listen for the waterfall before seeing it and compare leaves along the path.

Family tip : The pool is deep: this outing is an observation walk without swimming.

Mount Zas: the summit challenge

Naxos’s summit reaches 1,004 m. Active families can plan an out-and-back from Agia Marina with a current map; the loop via the cave is a different, more demanding route.

Who is it for?
Teens and experienced walkers
Allow
Half a day; time depends on route, weather and pace
Route
Summit and return by the same path; map essential
Effort
Strenuous; ascent and exposed terrain
Stroller / carrier
No stroller; not a first hike with a carried baby
Shade
Very little shade
Parking
Around Agia Marina; check space and access
Break
Carry water and food; assume no facilities at the summit
A game along the way

Spot visible islands and tell the myth of Zeus growing up on Naxos.

Family tip : Set a turnaround time: reaching the summit is optional.

Before setting off

Take water, a hat, supportive shoes and a downloaded trail map. For mountain walks check wind, heat and rain; keep enough energy for the return. With a baby, use suitable carrying equipment and terrain where the adult can walk steadily.

Your own photos will illustrate these walks.
